Ostia Antiquarium
NSc. 1912, p. 434; Giornale degli Scavi 1912, no. 5 p. 289
Ostia, House of the Painted Ceiling. (A building on the
via della Fontana). Excavations in the second room to the north of that already
excavated, which had notable frescoes (NSc. 1908 p. 21ff) and which forms part
of the same apartment. This room is also painted - decorated with goats, fish,
and white mosaic pavement. Among the remains were also found: a gold ring, three
denarii (one of which was Hadrianic), bronze objects (fibulae, money, etc), an
iron key. Three tokens in total were found here. The paintings in room 2 are
thought to date from the reigns of Antoninus Pius or Commodus. The house itself
dates from the reign of Hadrian, giving a terminus post quem of AD 117, and
suggesting tokens of this type date to the second century AD.
